DEPARTMENT OF NURSING

In Japan, health care is rapidly becoming more sophisticated, specialized and diversified. We expect students in this department to gain specialized technical knowledge and apply it in actual situations. In the future, we hope they will take an active role in the health care field as nurses and public health nurses. To that end, the goal of this department is to train students to be people who can apply the skills they learn, and solve problems in any situation, and cooperate with other medical and welfare professionals. We would like students not only to memorize facts but to get a well balanced perspective as adults and have a generous heart in their lives and their work. Courses are organized from various areas and supported by experienced, professional specialists invited from Japan and around the world to teach at AUHW.

In the Fundamental Nursing field students learn how to conduct physical examinations. Issues underlying nursing studies will be introduced and discussed. PBL (Problem-Based Learning) will be introduced in order for students to increase their practical ability. Students will research authoritative physiological literature to obtain an understanding of nursing education methods. In the Nursing Administration field, students learn about the creation of health care systems, and acquire basic knowledge and skills for nursing management.

In Adult and Gerontological Nursing, we start with the idea of "human care," to train nursing professionals who can adapt their practice to a changing society and developments in nursing. We offer as elective courses rehabilitation care, critical care, terminal care, and senile gerontological care, to deepen students' knowledge.

In Maternal-Pediatric Nursing, we aim to train experts who possess assessment ability and practical ability in the area of mother and infant nursing. We integrate the areas of maternity and infant nursing, as well as the overlapping areas in neonatal care and adolescent care, teaching the concepts common to maternity, infant, and family. We introduce new global trends in women's health. We are also involved in mother-child nursing research.

Community Health Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing focus on the following areas: children, maternity, learning disability, mental health, district nursing, occupational nursing & health care, school health, public health, and general practice nursing at private homes. In the psychiatric nursing/mental health field, we are active mainly in education and research related to psychiatric welfare, psychiatric medicine, and psychiatric nursing. We also aim to assist the study and research of specialists in these areas.
