In 21st Century Japan, the birthrate is decreasing, the percentage of elderly increasing, and more substantial health care will be expected. Until now, social welfare professionals have played an active role, supporting and consulting elderly and handicapped people in their daily life. However, the introduction in 1999 of insurance for elderly health care symbolizes a new social trend, and it will be very important to consider how to offer a diversity of welfare services to suit each community's distinctive features.
In Aomori Prefecture there is not a sufficient number of social welfare workers in the social welfare field; there is a need for professionals with technical knowledge and skills, as well as the qualities necessary to understand people's feelings. These professionals will be expected to work in cooperation with other people in the health and medical care fields, and coordinate welfare services which suit each person's daily routine.
In this department, we educate students to master specialized knowledge and skills systematically. Courses are organized from various subjects in the health and medical care fields. We emphasize practical training in order for students to improve their abilities and techniques while getting an optimum amount of instruction.
With our students, we hope to explore the ways to establish a community in which everyone can live a full life and never feel isolated.
