1.科目のねらい・目標

This is a language course which aims to build upon the skills and fluency acquired during the first three semesters. There will be emphasis on English for health and welfare studies and on presentation skills. Students will be encouraged to become independent learners, able to motivate and organize their own learning.

2.授業計画・内容・方法・準備学習等

This course will be taught entirely in English, and the use of Japanese will be strongly discouraged.

Students will spend most of their time communicating in English, often in pairs and small groups. 
As well as speaking, there will practice in listening, reading and writing.

Most lessons will take place in a classroom, but some time will be spent in the LT computer room.

2 ~ 4 Health & Welfare III (Issues in Japan, express opinions, discussion, debate)
5 ~ 7 Health & Welfare IV (Issues overseas, express opinions, discussion, debate)
8 Independent learning tools (reference sites, health and welfare sites)
9 ~ 10 Presentations I (useful language, planning, oral presentation skills)
11 ~ 12 Presentations II (small group mini-presentations)
13 Presentations III (consolidate presentation skills, individual presentation practice)
14 ~ 15 Speaking test - individual presentations on a health and welfare topic, course overview

The main emphasis is on improving students' ability to present clearly and effectively in English.

N.B. Individual teachers may change the order of topics to meet the needs of students and classes.

No set text will be used, but students will be issued will a course outline and course content will be the same for all groups.

5.成績評価方法

Reading, listening, and writing will be assessed throughout the course. Speaking and communication skills will be assessed during a presentation about a health and welfare topic at the end of the course.

Feedback from students has generally been positive, and this has encouraged us to continue emphasizing oral communication skills.
